I help students in the development of their voice using specialized tools to encourage the full potential of their artistry in an authentic way. Students will find this technique supports any genre because it addresses the foundation of what is occurring in your voice and your vocal tendencies. Whether its pop, jazz, opera, R&B, punk, new age or rock…witness your vocal evolution!

As a Certified IVA Voice Instructor, I employ foundational vocal practice, which helps train the voice to move from the bottom to top of their range with more ease, connected in a balanced way as to sing with no breaks, strain and thereby approaching their voice in a healthy and effective way.

Voice is a unique instrument in that it is the instrument within you and that is you, therefore, working with the voice can sometimes feel vulnerable but such a source of your innate power.

I am here to help you with the process of your greatness, to discover new uncharted territory within your voice and your practice, to be a witness to the unfolding of your voice and you as an artist. Yes, artist!

Where ever you are in your journey; a total beginner to a seasoned professional, let’s begin and get your singing on!

The IVA Technique

The IVA technique is based on 17th and 18th Century principles of singing developed by the Old Italian School of Singing. Our goal is to train voices to sing in a free and natural manner, smoothly, from the bottom of the range to the top with no breaks or sudden changes in quality. Training in this technique gives the singer access to all dynamics, with tonal clarity and flexibility.

Training in this technique helps improve a singer’s range, endurance, stamina, breath control, resonance, vocal strength and vocal quality across all styles of music without fatigue or damage to the voice.

Think of it as being an athlete. You need to train with a professional coach specialized in that field. Someone who can teach proper technique, avoid sports injury and has the resources and expertise to properly address your needs or know where to refer you. And like anything else, it is deep practice with proper technique and passion that builds cities of possibility and has people thinking it was all just talent or luck.

Vocal Strengthening & Support for People with Down Syndrome

Asheida is doing a case study involving the voice of people who have Down Syndrome. Scientific studies have shown that people who have Down Syndrome, a congenital disorder arising from a chromosome defect, often have hypotonia which is reduced vocal muscle tone. There are also several other factors which impede on one’s ability to clearly project. Asheida has a particular interest in vocally supporting those with Down Syndrome, to strengthen their voice and help them be heard and express more fully. As an advocate and instructor, she will be conducting her own research applying her vocal expertise in this area. From 1998 to 2014 Asheida worked in the Mental Health field as a Residential Care Worker and later as a Support Worker for the Vancouver School Board and in this time has worked with dozens of people and students with Down Syndrome.

Information on Lessons, Performances and Studio Policies

Structure of a Lesson
Your first lesson will begin with a check-up of your voice and your vocal background and history. I hear how your voice shows up in an exercise moving up and down in range and is designed to show where you need the most support.

Lessons will always include exercise warm-ups tailored to your vocal needs. As you learn and get skillful with the exercises and muscle memory is built, we move into songs and apply the new skills into the songs.

And like anything else, we only get better with practice☺ If practice is a challenge, I can help with that as well, through tips and tools used to combat self-sabotage and empower positive change!

Lessons can include coaching on posture exercises, alignment strategy, vocal toning and generally what I enjoy calling vocal yoga! Performance technique is can also be a part of a lesson.
Performances
There are multiple opportunities for students (upcoming artists) to perform and so if this calls you, we can work towards that and connect you with a right venue from small to large. Asheida is connected with musicians locally and internationally, particularly within Canada and the US and is interested in helping support this networking especially for charity work, activism and awareness purposes, fundraisers and projects with purpose.
24 Hour Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy
24 hours notice is needed if you are unable to attend your lesson to avoid cancellation fee (cost of the lesson booked). In some cases, if Asheida or the student can find someone to come for that booking, then the charge can be waived and the lesson is deemed used.

Students can cancel by calling the studio number at 604.715.0356 and leaving a message or email at info at asheida dot com. Confirmation that the cancellation has been made will be made by email.

If the teacher needs to cancel or reschedule, a makeup class will be scheduled for a mutually convenient time.
Payment Policy
Payment for lessons is due prior to the lesson. Lessons and packages can be paid for via: cash, Interac-Email transfer to Asheida, or in-person via Square (credit card). You can purchase voice lessons and packages via "Purchase Package" on this page in the section above.

Save 5% on any package by paying via Interac-Email transfer. Discount not applicable to single lessons.

Any cancellation, rescheduling or no show with less than 24 hours notice, the prepaid lesson will be forfeited.
Refund Policy
All lessons and lesson packages expire and are non-refundable and non-transferrable. If a lesson is cancelled before the 24 hour notice, a credit will be placed in the student’s account/record to be used before it’s expire date.

Asheida offers weekly and bi-weekly lessons. If you want to develop good vocal technique, it’s recommended to have weekly lessons. Sometimes bi-weekly lessons are helpful for people with busy schedules; it really depends on each person’s goals and schedule. Click here for the online scheduler: Book Sessions Online

Asheida teaches adults, teens and children. Typically 6+ years and all the way to 80 at present! Beginners, professional singers, actors and voiceover actors and public speakers are welcome. Asheida is a natural with kids and so lessons are interactive, fun and helpful.
Do you work with people on the speaking voice?
Yes, Asheida works with actors, voiceover actors and public speakers. She also works with seniors on their changing voice, to help them better project and keep things limber. I have vocal issues/condition that I’m concerned about. Can you help?
Can you help? People with vocal concerns and conditions are welcome to see Asheida for vocal assessment. She can determine from there if she can help you or refer you. Often it is recommended for someone in this case to get their doctor to refer them to an ENT specialist (Ears, Nose & Throat) and have a medical examination before clearance to do vocal work.
Can I book one lesson to try out or before an audition?
Yes, certainly. Asheida offers single lessons as well to accommodate students who are new and wanting to try it out or students needing vocal prep before a gig, audition, recording or touring. There is no commitment to book regularly unless you want to. Click here to book a lesson: Book Sessions Online
What if I can’t attend in-person and go on Skype? How does that work?
skype

Skype lessons are helpful for those not local as well as those with busy schedules that can’t make it to the studio all the time. It’s very similar to an in-person lesson and what is needed is the following: computer, high speed Internet, webcam, and the updated Skype software, which is a free download. Then do a search/connect with Asheida via Skype. You’ll be able to see/hear the instructor and vice versa. When singing songs or script, its best to have the background music or karaoke track on your end to avoid any delays in video chat. Similar lesson structure and exercises as needed for your voice is applied.

Once you’ve booked a Skype lesson with Asheida you will receive an email with your lesson details. Please be sure to read through to prepare for your lesson. All lessons are in Vancouver, PST time. Please use an online time converter to confirm lesson times in relation to your zone.
What if I’m a total, total beginner?
That’s totally, totally okay! Asheida loves teaching beginners find their voice and be able to apply it effectively in their life and artist expression. What’s better is that beginners haven’t developed bad habits, so that’s a great start!
Can we meet before I take lessons to discuss my vocal goals and needs?
You are welcome to email any questions and a brief of your vocal status, however, its best in-person so she can really hear what’s going on. Unfortunately, Asheida is unable squeeze in extra time to meet in advance however; goals and needs will be discussed in the first lesson. Its very helpful for Asheida to thoroughly assess the voice for the best tools and exercises that can support you. {Link to sample lesson coming soon.}
What style or genre do you teach?
I teach the foundation, good habits that can then be applied to any genre. Asheida has experience in classical, opera, pop, indie, jazz, musical theater, kids music and RnB.
